Executive Director Job Description



The Executive Director of the Verge Theater is selected by, and is responsible to, the Board of Directors for overall management of the organization, assets, programs, personnel and contractual relationships in accord with its organizational mission, goals, and operational policies.  The Executive Director  works with the Board of Directors on the development of resources, strategic planning, and the assurances of quality inall Verge programming and productions. In addition, The Executive Director is responsible for Theater Management and Education Programs.



  • Administers Verge Theater day-to-day operations

  • Assists Board of Directors in performing board of directors’ duties

  • Develops operational plans and budgets for achieving annual objectives.

  • Interfaces with Verge Committees and other relevant organizations and stakeholders.

  • Oversees all Operational committees and task forces.

  • Organizes staff and volunteer duties effectively in order to implement plans and manage data base.



  • Develops and leads implementation of annual fundraising plan.

  • Keeps the Board of Directors informed of overall progress, opportunities, and concerns.

  • Works with board members and supporters to identify prospective donors and corporate sponsors.

  • Keeps donors and prospects informed of Verge's work.

  • Assures that donors are thanked and acknowledged for gifts in a timely manner.

  • Maintains donor and supporter database



  • Prepares annual budgets for overall operations and brings to the Finance Committee for review.

  • Assures that financial reports are available to the Finance Committee (per Board approved policies) for monthly review.

  • Implements the Board approved organizational budget and project budgets with available funds, while maintaining the fiscal integrity of the organization’s finances.

  • Works with the Finance Committee to develop and follow fiscal policies as approved by the Board.



  • Promote the visibility of the organization before important audiences and stakeholders.

  • Ensures web site is functional, user-friendly, current, and high quality.

  • Oversees communications such as the website, email notices and social media.

  • Creates and maintains a Social Media Calendar.

  • Produces Posters, Season & Mid-Season Mailers and all other print media.

  • Writes and sends press releases for all shows.

  • Mails Kids Matinee posters to schools and daycares



  • Secures and maintains theater, furniture, equipment, and contracts as needed.

  • Develops positive working relationships with important vendors.

  • Renews Liquor License

  • Manages costume and properties inventory

  • Manages Theater calendar in a timely and accurate manner

  • Manages volunteers

  • Maintains Ticketing System

  • Manages Leases and Rental Contracts

  • Makes sure cash boxes are ready for box office and concessions for every show

  • Secures performing rights

  • Generates and reconciles production budgets for every show

  • Finds Filmographer for main stage and teen theater shows

  • Liaisons with directors to ensure show are on schedule and adhering to Verge standards and protocols

  • Keeps lobby, audience area and backstage as tidy as possible



  • Works with Program Committee to develop program content and curriculum for Kids Classes, Teen Theater, Adult Improv and Residencies

  • Secures, schedules and advises teachers

  • Develops and maintains teacher, director and actor protocols

  • Maintains class lists

  • Invoices and manages tuition accounts receivable

  • Liaisons with parents regarding current and future programs

  • Sets up residencies (3-5 schools/year approximately 75 visits/year)



  • Solid Non-Profit experience, minimum 2-3 years

  • BA/BS

  • Enthusiasm for Live Theater and understanding of its benefit to society

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • Ability to supervise and train volunteers and employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

  • Knowledge of marketing and social media strategies, processes, and available resources.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
